Louisa May Alcott was born on November 29, 1832 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. She wrote novels, young adult stories and poetry. Best known for Little Women, her sequels were Little Men and Jo’s Boys. She was raised by transcendentalist parents. The setting for Little Women was the Alcott family home and loosely based on Alcott’s childhood experiences with her three sisters. Alcott based her heroine “Jo” on herself. But whereas Jo marries at the end of the story, Alcott remained single throughout her life.
Alcott grew up among many of the well-known intellectuals of the day such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau.
Her father died in March 1888, and she followed him just two days later.

One of my all-time favorite authors. I think I’ve read almost every book, seen every movie, read many biographies, and visited Concord and her house there several times. Wonderful, wonderful example for any woman writer.
OOO, I would love to visit her house. I read Little Women four times, but I haven’t read any other books by her. It’s like I loved Little Women and was afraid to be disappointed by her other books. Silly, I know, but that’s how much I loved that book.
