What Do We Do In A Writing Retreat?

Jessica-DVC portrait

Jessica Barksdale, author and writing instructor at DVC and UCLA

Friday evening, the twelve attendees introduced themselves at Jessica Barksdale’s annual writing retreat. Local attendees met three writers from the Los Angeles area and one from San Dieg0 who flew up here for the event.

Jessica spoke about going deeper into the villains of our stories to make them more human. Villains are bad but not all bad. “They were babies once too.”

Here is what we did today, Saturday:

Jessica's retreat a break to chat

Chatted about writing

Jessica's retreat eating soup with Geby and Jennifer

Ate soup and salad on Jessica’s patio at the top of the S.F. east bay area hills.

Jessica's retreat hard at work

Worked on our creative projects.

Jessica's retreat eating in the shade Kari & Nikki

Had fun.

Jessica's retreat my group of 3

Four small groups of three members each met to  offer comments on our submissions. Keby and Maria gave me excellent feedback on a short story.

I’m off to do my homework due tomorrow, the last day of the retreat for another year.
