Rising Stars Book is Available on Amazon for 99 Cents

Donna Kozik has published my first chapter called “The C Word” in Rising Stars A Kindle Sampler. This chapter is from my new book My Mother’s Cancer ~ What Worked and What Didn’t, which will be published by the end of the year.

The other four chapters  in Rising Stars are written by  Moira Shepard, Roberta Gold, Tammy Atchley, and Cory Ford Stickley. Topics include the importance of  confidence, smiling, conversations, and change. https://amzn.to/31y5UiS

“The C Word” is what my mom always said instead of the word cancer. Little did we know that she would end up with the disease. This chapter is an introduction to who she was in order to  understand the tough choices we  made. The rest of my book, My Mother’s Cancer ~ What Worked and What Didn’t is comprised of my journal entries from the beginning of her wrongly diagnosed symptoms to her passing ten months later.

With several entries from those months, I add what we know now and what we could have decided differently. My dad and I have no regrets in what we choose to do. We had few options and often misinformation. We did the best we could at the time. I included these insights to help readers who might be in a similar situation.

I also give resources for products to ease the effects from treatments such as chemo and radiation. Watch for the launch at the end of November. In the meantime, you can order Rising Stars ~ A Kindle Sampler for 99 cents on Amazon: https://amzn.to/31y5UiS

The Mona Lisa Sisters Recommended

George Cramer has launched The Mona Lisa Sisters available on Amazon,  https://amzn.to/3jgpeHC

I remember years ago the photo prompt Cramer chose in my writing class that inspired this story. I read his rough draft and immediately loved the characters and the plot. The story waited as Cramer returned to college and earned two additional degrees, one in English and A Masters of Fine Arts/Creative Writing — Fiction. He nurtured the story, polished, polished, and polished it until now, I’m delighted to hold the book in my hand and read the compelling story again.

The back cover blurb states, “Lura Grisham Myer lives a perfect life until her world is ripped apart. Reborn, forged of pain and misery, she battles to recapture happiness with the help of two orphans and a mysterious stranger.”

The two sisters are abandoned while looking at the Mona Lisa portrait in the Louvre. The page-turning mystery continues with memorable settings and historical detail. The sisters and Lura Grisham Myer are unforgettable. https://amzn.to/3jgpeHC

Kirkus Review is quoted as saying, “The author deftly depicts the era’s American and European societal norms. Full of the period’s technological innovations, old-fashioned behavioral strictures, and elegant language, the work provides a perfect balance of mystery, romance, and history. A refined and entertaining tale about one determined woman exploring both motherly and romantic love.”

Author George Cramer had a career in law enforcement and went on to private and corporate investigations. He is an expert in interviewing and interrogation and has presented numerous seminars in his field.

How Many People You Know Have Cancer?

Most people know someone who has cancer. In 2020, the estimated number of new cancer cases is 1.8 million. I am writing my mom’s experience with this rampant disease to tell about the effects of crucial delays in diagnosis and treatment decisions. I also share how we dealt with it physically and emotionally.  Our story could help other people who have a loved one and feel alone in the struggles to keep that person alive.

My mother’s diagnosis surprised us. We hadn’t considered cancer since genetics wasn’t a factor and her blood tests and x-rays didn’t indicate it. It took months before cancer showed up on a test and by then it was at stage 4. The decision for treatment was not only difficult, the choice made her condition worse.

Watch for My Mother’s Cancer ~ What Worked and What Didn’t. It will be published at the end of this summer.

Journal Entries Can Be Put Into a Book

I journaled for a year about two decades ago. I stopped and had no intention of ever jounaling again.  I resisted suggestions from anyone who recommended it. I didn’t see a benefit from the many spiral notebooks I had filled with my handwriting about what was wrong in a relationship I was part of then.  When I found those notebooks in storage, I ripped them up and threw them in the garbage.

However, for ten months  in 2019,  I mini-journaled, meaning I wrote a few notes in each date square of the calendar. I tracked the many doctor’s appointments, what worked and what didn’t, and how we coped during  my mother’s encounter with cancer. I sensed it was information that would be helpful in the future–helpful to whom I wasn’t sure.

As I review them, I realize these entries can be supportive to anyone who is caregiving for a loved one with cancer. I’m using those notes to write a book. Most of it will be in epistolary form.  Epistolary is a popular genre where the narrative is told via a series of documents. Letters are the most common source, but diary entries are also popular. The title of the book is My Mother’s Cancer ~ What Worked and What Didn’t.  Sign up here if you want to know when the book will be published (by November). Please put “cancer book” in the subject line. julainak@sbcglobal.net

I’ll be posting more about it in the future.

In the meantime, I’m wondering if you journal and for how long you’ve been journaling. Do you use pen, pencil, or computer keyboarding?

If you don’t journal, maybe the Shelter-in-Place because of COVID might be useful journal entries for the future.
